Strictly come Politics…
21st Dec 2010
"Finally, this year’s run of reality television shows before Christmas is over. Newspapers have become obsessed by the X Factor losers, I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here Z list celebrities and Strictly Come Dancing’s fancy footwork. However I must admit that I was a fan of Ann Widdecombe’s 10 week survival on Strictly.
In Miss Widdecombe’s own words, as a former MP, she should be very apt at “smart manoeuvres, about-turns, fancy footwork, audience appeal and outlasting the competition”. These traits for successful politicians have been quickly learnt by the new intake of MPs, yet the Coalition is having to pull all the stops out to ensure audience appeal, both to the public and to their own parties.
Today it has been reported the Business Secretary, Vince Cable has claimed he could bring down the Coalition if he was “pushed too far”. His comments show the disquiet and infighting taking place within the Coalition. If the Business Secretary can’t present a united front with his fellow Government Ministers what message does this send out to businesses and individuals struggling to coming to terms with the difficult, but sadly necessary, budgetary cuts?
Yet even as I write, Cable has performed a magnificent pirouette and apologised for his comments. But then again we shouldn’t be surprised at Vince’s about-turn; he is a trained ballroom dancer and is in fact appearing on the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special!"
