How low can you go?

"With the AV referendum rapidly approaching, there has been much comment about the quality and accuracy of the communications of both the yes and no campaigns. While it has been generally accepted that the No campaign has been particularly poor at accurately representing the problems with AV, the Yes campaign certainly hasn’t covered itself in glory.
There seems to be a fundamental refusal from both sides to engage with the substance of the issues and the argument boils down to misleading posters and nonsense claims. While all campaigns necessarily simplify issues, this one has gone far farther than most and has had a very easy relationship with truth.
The impact of these techniques is particularly interesting for communications professionals. If the campaign with the simplest message wins even if the message is somewhat misleading, this will change the way political communications develops in the country.
We are all keen to see how this campaign plays out beyond the confines of the Westminster village. I suspect that most voters are more informed than campaigners give them credit for."
